Cupcake Saturday

Well, it's a little more than a cupcake. It's a whole cake today! What kind of Alice in wonderland birthday party wouldn't have a cake?! And since our birthday is tomorrow, we needed a cake anyway. So here it is, our Un-Birthday cake. (I have to say, it's probably the most elaborate cake we've ever had for our birthday. OK, it IS the most elaborate.) I think it looks pretty good for being amateurs. So glad we figured out the best ways to use our Cricut Cake machine. (Remember our carrot cupcakes? The carrots didn't look so hot...)
Can't wait for all of the possibilities for Cupcake Saturday!

I think we got everything or part of everyone in. Well, we had planned to. Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit didn't make it. There was a lot less room than we thought there would be! Which is a good thing, because it means less cake to eat. We made the top layer Alice's dress and bow, both of which came out pretty well, I think. And before I forget, I bet you're wondering what kind of cake it is. It's a White Chocolate Strawberry cake: white chocolate cake, strawberry filling, and white chocolate butter cream frosting. I hope it lasts until tomorrow!

It's been a wonderful week in Wonderland. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

I also decided to (try) to enter this into a challenge at Bitten by the Bug 2. I know it's a little outside of the box for a challenge, but I figured that since it was made in the kitchen, using the Cricut Cake, that it was worth a shot!

Today’s Party Trivia:
- The first witch hanging took place today in 1647, in Hartford, Connecticut.
- In 1783, the town of North Stratford (now Trumbull) celebrated "A Great Jubilee Day". It was held to celebrate the end of fighting in the Revolutionary War. It is considered a precursor to today's Memorial Day celebrations. (How cool is that?!)
- Bram Stoker's Dracula was first published today in 1897.

Kid-Friendly Friday: Wonderland-Style

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all had a great week and will be able to enjoy the weekend. Here's a quick craft to keep those little hands busy while mom enjoys some "me" time.

Materials:
Paper plate
Pencil
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils (black, pink, purple)
Scissors
Tape
Small dowel or popsicle stick

What To Do:
Step One:
Using your pencil, draw an outline of the Cheshire Cat's smile and nose. I chose to use a paper plate for this project because it is much easier to follow the rounded lines of the plate. (I'm no free-hand artist. I use any help I can get, even if it is from a paper plate!) I outlined mine with black marker so it would be easier to see. Feel free to do the same.

 Step Two:
Color him in! I used pink marker for the area around his mouth, and purple for his nose. Make sure to add those teeth in! He definitely needs a big toothy grin.

Step Three:
Time to cut him out. Cut along the outside lines, making sure not to cut his nose off!

Step Four:
On the back, attach the popsicle stick or dowel. I find tape is easier, quicker, and neater, but I'm sure you could use glue.

Step Five:
Enjoy your new smile! You can make him appear and disappear anywhere!

I couldn't help but smile behind it, even though I know you can't see it!

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to stop by tomorrow for some Alice-themed cupcakes! Can't wait to share them with you!

Today's Party Trivia

What an Idea. What a Mad, Crazy, Wonderful Idea.

Welcome to another day in Wonderland! We only have a few more days left on this journey, so we’ve made a project to remember it. OK, so, we made a scrapbook layout featuring all of our favorite characters.

This is an 8”x8” double layout. Alice is standing in the corner, looking for her next adventure. Maybe she’ll meet the White Rabbit down the hole again. The Mad Hatter’s, well, hat, appears out of nowhere, up in the corner. And who knows which way to really go in Wonderland?? Read the directions and directly you will be directed in the right direction. Right?! One of our favorite parts is the sparkly flower in the corner. It reminds me of Alice’s dress. And it has such fun leaves on it, too.
The picture above includes 'close-ups' of most of the images on the page.
Thanks for looking and join us tomorrow for another kid-friendly project. Bring your smiles!!

Today's Party Trivia:
- Alice may have had a White Rabbit, but Mary Had a Little Lamb was first published today in 1830
- After 14 years of construction, the Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883
- Igor Sikorsky (who would have celebrated his birthday tomorrow) performed the first successful flight of a single rotor helicopter.

"When That Day Comes I Shall Futterwacken...Vigorously"

Curiouser and curiouser? Who hasn't futterwackened? We've gone mad. But all the best people are, right?? OK, now that we've gotten your attention, here is today's project. After last week's treat box coming out so well, we decided to do some based off of the Alice characters. We have three to show today.

A Wonderland party wouldn't be complete without these three fine characters! The center of attention is Alice, of course. She is wearing her icon blue dress with white apron. To the left is the Mad Hatter, not looking nearly as crazy as he's made out to be! And on the right? It's a Tweedle! Which one? Tweedle Dee? Or Tweedle Dum? Who knows?! But he's a cutie! With all of his crazy hair, and his little beanie, too! How cute are they?! They're the perfect ending to a tea party!
Thanks for looking and come back tomorrow for the perfect way to commemorate a special day!

Today's Party Trivia:
- South Carolina became the 8th state in 1788.
- Like Polka music? The accordion was patented in 1829.
- Happy World Turtle Day!

What is The Hatter with Me??

Actually, not too much. I don't think... Happy Tuesday, everyone! We hope everyone is having a good week so far. We are having a blast with all of these Alice in Wonderland projects! Today’s post is a little different than some of our other projects that we’ve done, although it still uses paper and ribbon. It’s actually two different projects. They would be perfect for photo props! (Don't mind the model...)
The first is Alice’s hairbow. It’s a little black bow attached to a headband. So cute and simple! And of course, it’s a nice way to doll-up any hairdo! Perfect for everyday, as well!
The second isn’t quite as multi-purpose, but just as cute (In our opinion!) This is the Mad Hatter's fascinator! It includes his icon card, of course!, How cute is it?
Thanks for stopping by! Join us tomorrow for another Wonderland project- it’ll be a treat!

5/22- Today’s Party Trivia:
-
The first atlas was published in 1570. It had 70 maps in it.
- Charles Darwin and Co. set sail on the HMS Beagle in 1826 (sorry, it’s the science teacher in me!!)
- The first wagon train began the five-month journey on the Oregon Trail. (the trip is long enough by car, imagine in a wagon. As long as you can ford the river and don’t have to caulk the wagon, I guess.)

A Merry Un-Birthday Banner

Hello, hello! Today we have a very large banner to share with you. It might be the only decoration you need for a small space, it takes up that much room! We chose to go with really bright fun colors for the pieces of this banner. Definitely appropriate for an Alice-themed party. We used an Alice in Wonderland font that we found for the words, "merry un-birthday," and our Cricut for all the circles. (It would've taken for-ever doing them by hand!) We used the early birthday present we got ourselves (the Disney Classics cartridge) for the teacups and birthday cake. Other than making all of the rosettes, which Dawn was lucky enough to get stuck with, the hardest part was making sure that each piece had every color on it. Too bad it wasn't until we were hanging it up that we noticed that didn't work out for all of it. Oh well, it is still a very fun, whimsical banner and we love it! It adds so much color to the wall that we may have to keep it up till past our birthday! (That and we aren't really sure where to store it since all of the pieces together take up a lot more room than one might think...)

Come back tomorrow for another Wonderland project!

Today's Party Trivia:
Clara Barton started the American Red Cross in 1881

(slow news day, apparently...)

Don't Be Late!

Late? For a very important date! Like I said yesterday, we are super excited for this week's theme! Over the next two weeks, our family has four birthdays coming up. After we had our fiesta, we decided that we wanted to have a "birthday party" (even if it is just the two of us!) We played around with some ideas and finally decided to have an "un-birthday" this year, because, let's be honest, who likes to get any older?? So, what does that mean? We're having an Alice in Wonderland themed week! It's very exciting!
Anyway, you can't plan a party without some invitations. That's just Party-Planning 101. So, here are the invitations we designed.

This first one is the Mad Hatter's hat. There are two parts to it. The first is the hat base. We didn't make it stand open because we really don't have any one to invite to this shindig, so we didn't need the extra room for more information. The second part is where all of the information for the party is. Instead of "In this style 10/6" as the Mad Hatter has on his hat, we used it to put the date of the party. On the flip side of the card is all the party information for the guests. It all fits snuggly in the brim of his hat.
The second invitation features the White Rabbit and his ever-present timepiece. He's running because he doesn't want to be late for the party! He also pops out a little, too. (You can see a little bit of a shadow in the picture above.) And you can't celebrate the Queen of Hearts without a few hearts on the invitation!

Thanks for looking and join us all this week for our Adventures in Wonderland!

Today’s Party Trivia:
- Christopher Columbus died today in 1506
- Levi Strauss patented blue jeans, and the copper stitching, today in 1873
- Today was a big day in aviation history. Charles Lindbergh (1927) and Amelia Earhart (1932) began their solo, non-stop flights across the Atlantic Ocean.
